walk in the word
Category: God’s Character, Relying on God, Your Walk With God
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5
You can’t make yourself joyful. Take it from me, it’s not possible no matter how hard you try.
You can say to yourself, I’m gonna be a joyful person today. You can put a big smile on your face and determine that you’re going to be cheerful everywhere you go. And it may work for a couple hours, but before long something will crash up against your life and guess what? The flesh joy will be gone.
As you begin again at the starting line today, think about where real joy comes from. Let’s start with a definition: joy is “a supernatural delight.” We’ve already figured out we can’t manufacture it—only God can give you joy. You can do a lot of things to reduce joy, but you can’t do anything to well it up. You can plug it, but you can’t produce it. Only God can give you joy.
On the broadcast this week we’re looking at the source of joy coming from three things. Joy can be found:
#1 In the person of God. When we see God’s true character revealed in our world, we get joyful. Even better, when you notice His fingerprints in your life—when you’re more loving, more patient, more obedient and you admit, that’s not me, that’s God! Get ready for the joy!
#2 In the purposes of God. Lasting joy comes from connecting with God’s purposes. God is doing some great things in our world. Do you want to be a part of them? Don’t stand on the sidelines, man. Get on the field! If you participate in the purposes of God, you’re going to know real joy.
#3 In the people of God. As we work for God’s purposes, we link arms with God’s people and that is the third part of joy: a deep satisfying relationship with others who know and love the Lord. That’s where joy comes from—delighting in the person of God—working for the purposes of God in partnership with the people of God.
