walk in the word
24And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. 25In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. —Judges 21:24-25
When the people of God are not told the works of God from the Word of God, they lose the wonder of God, and everyone does that which was right in his own eyes. That’s the whole book of Judges in the Old Testament. Look again at Judges 21:25. When people forget God’s in charge they’re already in deep trouble.
Think of some of the miracles that God did between Exodus and getting to the Promised Land. Breaking the power of Egypt, parting the Red Sea, providing manna (raining bread down from heaven) and delivering meat by quail-mail are at the head of the list. God brought water from a rock. It was like a miracle a day. And when you think of it that way, are our lives any different? Are you tracking God’s miracles in your life?
Here’s the mistake the Israelites made. When the people who saw the miracles got old, they didn’t tell their children. They didn’t offer their kids a personal report—This is what I saw God do! And when we don’t tell our children the works of God and the Word of God—here it is—they lose the wonder of God. And so the parents and the grandparents are singing, “Our God is an awesome God,” and the kids are like, “What!? What are they talking about?” If you don’t tell your kids and your grandkids what God has done for you, don’t expect them to be impressed by your God! And if you don’t live for that God yourself, don’t expect them to live for Him.
When the people of God (I can’t say it better than that) are not told the works of God, they lose the wonder of God—and then they and succeeding generations wander from God. They forgot God was King, so they made themselves kings: “And everyone did that which was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). The best gift you can give your children and grandchildren is a living testimony of God’s Word and works. Don’t waste God’s miracles. Let your family hear and see what God has done and is doing in your life.
Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, help me remember that Joshua’s declaration As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord will only go as far as my children and grandchildren know Your Word and Your works— or know You. Help me be a faithful testimony to Your miracles to those inside my house. You are always welcome under our roof, Lord! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
