19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. — Romans 8:19–21
The whole world, the universe, is winding down. It’s getting worse. It’s twisted. Romans 8:20 says that the whole creation was “subjected to futility.” Romans 8 also says that the created world is in bondage to decay. All it can do is break down and fall apart and get worse and worse and worse. The planet itself is broken.
When Adam and Eve chose to sin and plunged the human race into sin, God stepped forward in the early chapters of Scripture and cursed the planet. It doesn’t work right. And God’s not trying to fix it, not now. Some day He will fix it, but not now.
Every planet problem is because of sin. Every people problem—physical, mental, relational, can be traced back to its roots—sin. Every struggle that we have now or will have in the future, all of it is because of sin. Because we’re twisted and broken, too.
Now, we weren’t made this way. When God made us originally in the Garden of Eden, we were perfect. We’re not so anymore. But when our first ancestors chose to sin, that tore at the fabric of what God made them to be, and God judged them with the same twisted brokenness that the creation has. We’re part of that as human beings and we have it, too. We weren’t made that way, not originally, but we are that way now. All of us. Not just twisted and broken in our bodies, but in every way.
Each act of greed and selfishness is because we are twisted and broken. Every breaking of God’s law, every violation of another person, every self-exalting, others-debasing, wounding action is because of sin. And the human soul, the part of us that lives forever, it’s even broken. It’s subjected to decay. It’s in bondage to futility. Which basically means it’s trapped in a downward spiral until God intervenes.
Scripture says that evil men will grow worse and worse, and it’s going to get worse and worse and worse until God himself comes back and steps onto the world stage and rights all that is wrong. It’s all because of sin.
Until we understand this bad news applies to us we can’t really hear the good news of the Gospel. So until tomorrow, think about what it means that the root of every problem is the sin that saturates your life. — James MacDonald
Lord, thank You that I can come to You, though still living in a world of sin, and talk to You. Listen to my groans (Romans 8:26–27) and respond to my heart. Because I am covered by sin, I long to know Your continual grace and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
