12Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14And He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” —Exodus 33:12-14

There's a lot in those three verses—you should read them again! Moses is saying, "God, you want me to lead these people, but you haven't told me who is going to help me.” So he's praying, "Look God, I need You to be with me. You’ve given me a job; now I need You to go with me."

The bigger the job, the more you realize that you can't be alone. The most critical moment in every person’s life is when they kind of add up their resources and they say, "You know what? I don’t have it. I can't be the father I'm supposed to be; I can't be the wife I'm supposed to be. I don't have enough in me to do what I need to do." Have you ever come to that place? That's why, like Moses, we turn to God. When we come to church, we’re saying, "I don't have it myself but I know Who to get it from!" We must come to the place where you can honestly say like Moses said, "I don't have it."

God answers him in verse 14, “And he said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’” I mean, what else do you need to hear, right? What if you could hear God say to you, "I'll go with you," "I'm going to work with you this week." "Going to the hospital? I'm going with you." Wouldn’t knowing that make you relax? That’s what God promises—“I will give you rest.”

John Wesley, a great revivalist from England, was dying. This guy preached every Bible passage, traveling by horseback and delivering over 40,000 sermons. He practically knew the Bible by heart. On his deathbed, with his family gathered around him, Wesley sat up and said, "Best of all, God is with us." He died with those words on his lips.

Best of all, God is with us when we go through things. Moses is saying here, "God, I can go through pretty much through anything, but I need the promise that you're going with me. I can't do this alone, God." God will keep His promise to us as He did to Moses.

  • As I face this day, what difference does it make that God is with me? What wouldn’t I want to handle without His help?

Prayer: Father, I don’t want to go anywhere or undertake anything without the assurance of Your presence. The more I realize my dependence on You, the more I recognize that Your presence and Your help are never optional for me. On my own I fail; with You, I win! Whatever’s next, thank You for promising to be with me, Lord! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
