walk in the word
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Psalm 34:1
“Worship” is a buzz word among Christians these days that covers everything from praise bands to solemn, prayerful choirs. While worship has many styles and expressions, it has just one goal. Worship means “to ascribe worth to God.”
Worship says, “God, You are worthy!” Worth or worthy is a picture of perfectly balanced scales; the word comes from the practice of weighing gold on a scale. If the gold was equivalent to the weight in the scale, it was considered worthy—it balanced out. When Scripture say God is worthy, it means that there is no amount of praise that we can heap upon Him that could tip the scale. He is worthy of everything that we can say. We can’t come close to overdoing our praise of Him. It will always balance out.
Psalm 34: 1-7 gives us incredible insight into different ways we can worship God. In just three short verses we find six different expressions of worship: bless, praise, boast, rejoice, magnify, exalt. These six words stand like soldiers surrounding the seated Sovereign, each one with their own salute, each one with its own way of ascribing worth to God. We’ll look at the first word here. Tune in to the broadcast today to hear about the other five and even more about worship as we study God’s character in the series, “Yahweh.”
Look now at the first word, “bless” in Psalm 34:1,“I will bless the Lord.”
Me bless God? We’re a lot more familiar with the concept of God blessing us—like with health and strength and a roof over our head than we are at blessing God. But 35 times in Scripture we read: “I bless the Lord.” Wow—what could we ever do that would bless the Lord? God’s own Word tells us—when we worship Him, we bless Him.
You may say, “Well, James, most days I’d be with you in this, but we’re going through some pretty deep waters in our life right now. Worship doesn’t come real easily.” Well, thanks for your honesty and I’m so glad we’re studying Psalm 34:1 today because this is for you!
