Category: Your Walk With God
“God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.” 2 Corinthians 9:9
True or false?—God wants to bless you abundantly.
“Well, what exactly are you talking about, James? Are you saying that if I give generously then I’m gonna get a lot of money back? Are you joining the ranks of those so-called evangelists who parade on TV, Just send your money in right now, brother. Sow the seed of faith and He will multiply it ten-fold. ‘Cause if you’re saying that then I’m on the wrong website…”
Hang on—I’m not saying that. People who make those claims distort Scripture.
The truth is, God does rewards generosity . . . in a whole lot of different ways.
The first one we’ll look at is the most obvious—through abundant finances. Paul told the Corinthians that God gives seed to farmers so they can do their thing. God also provides money for you and me to be generous so He will continue to multiply the seed. God gives us more so we can give more.
One of the great delights of Walk in the Word is that I get to meet people around the country who love the Word of God and love to support the proclamation of God’s truth. I believe some people are blessed financially because they are so generous to support God’s work.
But that’s not the only kind of abundance. Here’s another kind. “Multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9:11). This kind of abundance is in your character, growth, and personal transformation.
Do you know who the happiest person in the world is? I do. I don’t know their name or where they live, but I know the happiest person on earth is the most righteous person. Righteousness is not cod liver oil that you have to swallow. If you think that, you don’t get it. Righteousness is shedding all of the things that make you miserable and embracing fully the path that God has laid out that leads to peace, joy, and fulfillment. If you are truly a loving, humble, giving person, filled with peace and joy, then you are blessed indeed. Hosea 10:12 says, “Sow for yourselves righteousness . . . for it is time to seek the Lord until He comes and reigns righteousness on you.” Now that’s a storm you want to stay out in.
Sometimes the abundance that God gives you is that He uses your life. This is the most wonderful thing that life has to offer. Have you had a chance recently to talk about God and what He’s done for you? Blessed to be a blessing is the biblical principle. God pours out abundance upon you so that you can minister to others.
Here’s another way you can experience God’s abundance. Live as God intends you to live. People will recognize that your faith is not just a talk thing, it’s a walk thing. They see that something real is going on in your life. If God is blessing you this way, then you’re gonna be in real demand. If you’re ready to teach or encourage or minister in whatever way God’s Spirit has gifted you, you become very, very popular. One of the abundant blessings of a generous life is you have a lot of really neat relationships. If you’re feeling alone, move as quickly as you can to a generous, giving, others-oriented kind of life and you will have all the people you can handle and others waiting in line.
So to recap 2 Corinthians 9:6-15—God pours out different kinds of abundance: finances, righteousness, ministry, relationships and one more . . . worship. To end this section, Paul wrote, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” Simply said, “Only Christ could do this in a person’s life.” Only He could take a selfish, self-oriented, hoard-for-us-and-nobody-else kind of person (and that’s the kind of people we were) and cause you to love others and love to give to others. He says in effect, “Praise God, generosity produces abundant worship!”
Now let me ask you, of those five things, what is your greatest need?
Do you have big time financial needs? You’re wrong if you think you need to hoard and save. I’ll tell you in a moment how to get that need met.
Or is it righteousness? Have you been struggling with a certain defeat in life and you wonder, “Why do I go round and round the same problem over and again? I want change! I need God to pour out abundant, transforming power on me so I can be a righteousness man or woman.” Is that your need?
Maybe it’s ministry. Bottom line, you’re just not doing anything for God. What have you accomplished for God and for His kingdom in the last year? “Nothing.” Do you want that to be different?
Or maybe it’s relationships or worship. In your heart you’re saying, “God, I need to sense Your presence in my life. My heart’s become so cold. My life’s so dry, God. I need a fresh move of Your Spirit.”
It all comes down to faith. If you need to experience God’s abundance, put your focus here. Faith accelerates the flow of abundance. Without faith you won’t believe in a God who watches and sees and knows what you give. Without faith you won’t believe that God will make grace abound toward you. Without faith you won’t believe that you’ll get more finances, more righteousness, more ministry, more relationships, more worship. Without faith you won’t believe that God will not only meet your needs but give an abundance so that you can meet the needs of others.
God can do that. Do you believe that “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, so that you will have all sufficiency for every good work”? I could go to a thousand more Scriptures that say the same message. “Where your treasure is, that’s where your heart is.” Here’s my final thought from Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you.” God wants to bless you abundantly. He long for you to experience Him…abundantly. Believe it.
