walk in the word
Category: Spiritual Life
For the last two weeks, we have been talking about the filling of the Holy Spirit. We have seen that for real power to change, we need to be filled (and refilled) by the third person of the Trinity. Here are three steps that a believer must take for that to happen.
1. Confess All Known Sin. Take a pen and paper to a quiet place and get down on your knees before God. Begin with this simple prayer: “Lord, I know I have been grieving and quenching the Holy Spirit. I want to deal with my sin right now. Please bring to mind all the things in my life that are grieving to Your Spirit. Please remind me about times I have quenched Him and not followed Your promptings!” Have your pen ready because the Holy Spirit truly wants to fill you, and He will not until you remove the barriers. He will bring to mind many things: relationships that are not right; sins you have not made right with the people you injured; sinful actions and attitudes you have chosen; righteous priorities that you have neglected.
As they come to mind, write them down, saying, “Yes, Lord. Is there anything else?” When the list is complete, go back over it, repenting of each specific matter on the list. As you do, promise the Lord you will do the horizontal work of restitution, making it right with others.
2. Ask the Holy Spirit to Fill You. I love what Jesus said in Luke 11:9-10: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” Then Jesus says, “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?”
Do you have kids? I am sure you love them, don’t you? Imagine your son comes to you and says, “Dad, can I have some bread?” You would not answer, “Oh, yeah. C’mon into the kitchen. I’ll give you some.” And then, when he gets there, you say, “Ha! Here’s a stone.”
You say, “That is sick. What kind of father would do that?”
That is Jesus’ point. “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13). Isn’t that a great promise? That is what God is like. If we know how to give good gifts to people we love, do you think our loving Father knows how to do that? Let me tell you, He does.
Confess all known sin and just ask Him, “Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit today.” Pray this every day: “Lord, fill me with Your Spirit today.”
3. Believe You Have Received the Spirit’s Filling. Begin to “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16) by submitting to His control moment by moment. Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24). So, if you are praying, “Lord, fill me with Your Spirit,” and at the same time telling yourself, “This isn’t going to work. This is just another wishful thought. Why am I even saying this?” God will not answer your request. You have to believe that God really wants to fill you with His Spirit.
Don’t let your heart fill with unbelief. Confess all known sin. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit. Believe that the Spirit’s filling is really available to you. And then . . . get ready to experience God’s transforming power!
