1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh. —Romans 8:1-3
Some of us have been convinced we can change by digging up our past. It’s called psychoanalysis. Sigmund Freud believed that human behavior is determined by powerful, inner forces, most of which are buried in our subconscious. We push down and suppress all kinds of negative experiences. And Freud’s strategy was to discover these “hidden” things and bring about change by deep drilling into the dark and dastardly that must be in our past. Once we find that hidden thing we can change; if we can’t change, we haven’t found the thing yet! That sounds like a vicious cycle! The idea that repressed information controls everything about you is just wrong.
Now, any loving, biblical counselor ought to ask you what’s happened in your life, but the assumption that something back there explains everything doesn’t work. Actually, the Bible teaches that the key to change is not necessarily remembering things that may or may not have happened. The key is facing what you do remember, forgiving it, and forgetting it. And that’s the order that it happens: face, forgive, and forget. Don’t try to forget without forgiving. Don’t try to forgive without facing. But after you face it, by God’s grace you forgive it. And then you forget it.
You are not a victim! Awful things may have happened to you, but they do not control you! You may let them control, but they don’t have that power in themselves. Romans 8:1 says, “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Once you are in Christ, nothing can condemn you, knock you down, or grind you under their heel .You are a son or a daughter of the Living God! You are not a victim. Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The answer is: No one can. God is for you!
Romans 8:37 says, “No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Nothing has happened or will happen that, by God’s grace, you can’t climb on top of and rule over and, in the power of the Holy Spirit, be set free from. But first we’ve got to dump faulty plans for
Prayer : Father, forgive me for insisting I can figure my way out of problems rather than trusting Your instructions. Thank You that my times (including my past) are in Your hands and I can trust You to reveal what I need to know and seal up what won’t help. I do need Your grace as I practice facing, forgiving, and forgetting those parts of my past that are clear and painful to me. I count on that grace in Jesus’ name, Amen.
