walk in the word
9How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. —Psalm 119:9-11
People often think they have come up with a good reason not to expose themselves to God’s Word. These excuses say a lot about us; they say nothing about God’s Word. O that I could be God’s Holy Spirit to you and that you would pick up this book and let it infiltrate your soul!
We surveyed 100 people and here are the top four answers they gave to this question: Name a reason that people give for not picking up and reading the Bible. So we’ve got to have a feeling why some of you some times, why some of us some times don’t pick up the Bible. Survey says! (In descending order from the fourth one.)
So, your excuse isn’t novel and it doesn’t really give you a reason not to spend time in God’s Word. According to Psalm 119:9-11, you will not be able to guard your life, seek God, or keep from wandering unless you are immersed in God’s Word. Any reason for avoiding the Bible doesn’t overcome the downside that results. Go after God’s Word.
Almighty Father, I do want to truthfully say that I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You. I long to experience the inoculation against sin that Your Word can create in my life. I know I can never claim to seek You with my whole heart until I am spending significant time in Your Word. Guide me in that path of righteousness, for Your name’s sake. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
