walk in the word
7Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! 8Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! 9Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth! 10Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let’s be truthful; when you read that title did you think something like, “Wow! That sounds great! Where do I trade mine in for a new one?” There’s not going to be that kind of trading or changing this month. The great thing about God’s work in our lives and in our families is He wants to transform the way we relate to each other without throwing anyone under the bus. Because, if you have three or more kids and a vote was taken about who gets “left out” in the change process, the majority just might vote you and your spouse out the door! But God’s got a place for fathers, mothers, and kids together, working with Him to bring out the best in each other, even when the road is rocky and the challenges seem daunting.
In case you haven’t quite gotten it, when it comes to changing families, we don’t start with the family. We don’t even start with you. We start with God. The family was His idea. Your family was His idea. No one is there by accident. He not only has a plan for families, He also has a plan for your family. It’s an amazing combination of the plans He has for each of the people in your family. We can’t figure it out. Only He knows it like a designer knows a fine mechanism or an artist knows his work. So we start with God and we stay with God every step of the way.
When it comes to change, we’re experts at making things worse. God knows how to make things better! This doesn’t mean God works a flashy magic trick with the people in our family and makes everything instantly perfect. It does mean God can work a miracle and take a family of fallen and broken human beings and refashion their relationships into something, not flawless, but something that brings Him glory! As the passage above says, families ascribe to the Lord all His great character, not just with their verbal worship, but also with the way we live our lives together. And if change is needed, let’s let the One who knows how to change people and situations the right way do His work in us.
Prayer – Heavenly Father, I admit it’s easier to see flaws in my family than it is to see flaws in me. I realize in order for You to bring about the right kind of change in us, You’re going to have to work on me. I admit that frightens me. But I want to acknowledge even though I fear change will affect me, You are the One who can bring about the right changes in the right way. I want to live out that awareness each day in my relationships with each person You have placed in our family. In Jesus’ name I humbly pray, Amen.
