Authentic isn’t just something you feel; authentic is something you do. People who have authentic faith do certain things—they develop the disciplines of a sincere faith.
Start with this question as it relates to your prayer life: Is my prayer real?
Is it genuine, is it sincere? Jesus said, “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward” (Matthew 6:5).
If you love the impression that your prayer life creates, if your public prayer exceeds your private prayer, if you prefer it that way—Jesus says you have your reward. It’s not wrong to pray in groups or pray as couples. But that needs to be the overflowing of what’s happening in secret.
